Tax Returns

It's obvious from the number of people that are stressed out during tax season that no one likes the job of filing tax returns. Even if a person is anticipating a refund, the idea of preparing income tax returns just seems to take the pleasure out of the anticipated refund. Perhaps it is easy to understand why some taxpayers prefer to pay someone to prepare their federal tax returns – a little on the order of the commercial that used to be on television that said "take Greyhound and leave the driving to us." Even with the ability to prepare tax returns online using software that makes calculations accurately, many people find the idea of filing federal income tax returns intimidating.

Depending upon your income, you may qualify to file free tax returns. Choosing that options means that your 2006 tax returns will be electronically filed free of charge. Depending where you live you may also be able to file state tax returns free. Not all states are included in the free e-File program, so when you file your IRS tax returns, you need to check the list of states to see if your state participates. After you complete your free online tax returns, you can then file the tax returns online, and a couple days later check the status of the tax returns. Keep in mind, though, that although you may be able to process delinquent tax returns, you can only e-File up until October 15th of the year the IRS tax returns are due. In other words, for the tax year ended December 31, 2006, you can only e-File until October 15, 2007. After that date, you will need to print your return and mail it with any supporting documentation.

Using the software for online tax returns is convenient and inexpensive. Even for those who do not qualify for the free programs, the pricing is far below what you can expect to pay a tax preparer. In addition, using e-Filing with direct deposit means that your money will be in your account without approximately fourteen calendar days instead of the customary six to eight weeks when you file by mail and request a physical check. Not only is e-Filing convenient for the taxpayer, it's the method that the IRS encourages. Taxing agencies are encouraging people to take advantage of direct deposit because of the cost savings to both recipient and sender. After all, no checks need to be printed and no mailing is necessary. To get your refund the quickest, e-File your return and request direct deposit into your checking or savings account.
